The tint responds to UV exposure, darkening within moments of stepping into direct sun and clearing again over a short period once the light drops. The transition is gradual rather than instant in either direction.
Windshields filter a portion of UV light, so photochromic lenses generally tint less behind glass than they do outdoors. The polarized filter still cuts windshield and road glare regardless of how dark the tint goes.
