The trays sit in the upper section and the storage compartment sits below them. Once the cubes are frozen, pressing down on the top panel pushes all 48 out of the trays at once and they drop into the compartment underneath. There is no twisting, no running the tray under a tap, and no cubes flying across the kitchen.
The two trays hold 24 each, so 48 freeze in one cycle. Once those are released into the compartment below, the trays can be refilled straight away, which is how the compartment builds up more than a single batch.
