Place the claw head over the weed, step down on the foot pedal to drive the prongs into the soil around the root, then tilt or twist the handle to extract the weed. A push or twist action on the handle releases the weed without needing to touch it by hand.
The 5 Tooth has a narrower claw suited for smaller or thinner-stemmed weeds and tighter spots. The 6 Tooth provides a mid-range grip that works well for most common garden weeds. The 11 Tooth has a wider claw with more grip coverage for larger weeds with sprawling root systems. All three share the same shaft, pedal, and release mechanism.
Moist or moderately loose soil gives the best results. For hard-packed or dry ground, dampening the area before use helps the prongs penetrate more easily and improves root extraction.
