Automotive terminals are held in a connector by a small plastic or metal barb. The key slides into the housing next to the terminal and lifts that barb clear, at which point the wire pulls out from the back. Without the key, the barb has to be forced, which is what damages the housing and the pin.
No, and any kit claiming otherwise is overstating it. Terminal retention designs vary between manufacturers, which is why the kit includes single-pin, double-pin, and tube style keys in a range of sizes rather than one universal tool. The common styles found on most cars and motorcycles are covered, but unusual or proprietary connectors may need a specific tool.

That is the point of using the correct key. A terminal released properly comes out undamaged and can go straight back into the same or another housing. A terminal pried out usually has a bent or flattened barb and will not lock in again.

Back it out along the same line it went in rather than twisting or levering. These keys are deliberately thin so they fit the gap, and that same thinness means twisting is what snaps a tip.
Dry. The keys are thin steel and will show surface corrosion faster than heavier tools if left damp in a toolbox after work in an engine bay.
