The lace runs the full length of the front and sets the overall fit. The two buckle straps sit over the laces and handle everything after that. Most people lace them once to the right tension and then use only the buckles day to day, which is faster than relacing a boot this tall every morning.
They follow standard US men's sizing. Snug with room to move the toes is the fit to aim for. Anyone who wears thick socks with boots should consider going up a half size, which is straightforward here since half sizes run through the entire range.
It is cast into the metal buckle straps, two per boot. Printed or stamped detailing on leather rubs away at the contact points within a season. Cast hardware does not.
The shaft is 7.1 inches, which sits well above the ankle bone and clears the hem of most boot cut jeans. The heel measures 1.4 inches at the front and 1.9 inches at the back.
