The 20 x 31 in suits a standard single front door. The 24 x 35 in gives more landing room for a busier entry. The 31 x 47 in covers a wide or double doorway, or a stretch of hallway just inside the door.
It works under a covered entry, a porch or a balcony doorway where it is sheltered. An absorbent fabric mat left in open rain will stay saturated, so it performs best somewhere it can dry out.
