No. The fixture mounts flat against a finished ceiling using the included hardware. There is no hole saw, no recessed can, and no drywall patching afterward, which makes it a practical option for homes that were never wired for recessed lighting.
Most kitchen counters are covered well by one fixture every 2 to 3 feet along the run. A standard 8 foot counter usually takes three or four of the 12W fixtures. Hallways generally space wider, roughly one fixture every 4 feet.
