Measure the bike from the front tire to the rear tire for length, then from the ground to the top of the tallest fixed point for height. A windshield, top box, or fairing adds height and often pushes the choice up a size. When a measurement falls between two sizes, the larger one is the safer pick, since a cover that is slightly loose still works and one that is too small will not close at the bottom.
Two reinforced straps run under the belly of the bike and buckle on the far side, which is what holds a cover down. Elastic hems alone tend to lift. It is worth checking the straps after the first windy night to confirm the tension is right for the bike.
They let a cable pass through the cover and down to the fork or front wheel, so the bike can be locked without lifting the cover off. To be clear, the cover is not a theft deterrent on its own. The grommets simply mean a lock and a cover can be used at the same time.

Yes, completely. Exhaust pipes and engine cases hold heat long after a ride ends, and putting fabric against them will melt or scorch the cover. Waiting until everything is cool to the touch is the rule.
Shake out grit and leaves, then rinse with plain water and let it air dry fully. Machine washing, bleach, and solvents all strip the coating that makes the surface shed water in the first place.
It folds into the included drawstring bag, small enough for a saddlebag or under seat storage. Folding it while damp is what causes mildew, so it needs to be dry first.
The larger sizes are built for that. A full dresser with a fairing, hard bags, and a top box generally needs the 3XL or 4XL, since the top box in particular adds height that a standard size will not clear.
