The sole covers the full underside of the foot, which is what puts a barrier between skin and stone, shell, or gravel. It is a thin sole by design, so it protects against sharp edges rather than cushioning the way a hiking shoe would.
The upper is an open mesh, so water passes through it rather than soaking in and staying. Shaking them out and leaving them in moving air handles the rest. Fully drying before storage keeps the mesh in better shape.
